About the series

The 10 part series, ‘we are (t)here,’ is an exploration of memory and experimentation of colour and light. After being evicted unexpectedly in 2023 and suffering a period of severe burnout and depression, she decided to draw the fond memory of their old bedroom in the Annex. In Danika’s mind was the warm imprint of their windowsill she claimed as a seat in the summer, the body’s memory of the too-hot iron heater and cool breeze from the cracked top; the diptych Albany/Albany After Dark (2023) was created.

In the summer of 2024, after a series of devastating personal losses, Danika turned back to what she did in the fall of 2023. Finally in a period of stability (home-wise) she thought back to spaces where she felt the lowest – they were also spaces she remembers filled with light and the laughter of friends. Through looking at old photos she found that memories of the spaces were flawed, but the fondness of them never changed. In an attempt to share these vibrant rememberings, and to turn their great grief into something beautiful, they began making ‘we are (t)here’ in a matter of weeks.
